MIDDLE SCHOOL RELIGION

The CJCR Middle School Religion curriculum consists of the study of the Old and New Testaments, the life of Jesus, the sacraments, Church history and moral decision-making. Through role-playing, creative writing, artistic expressions, class discussions and debates, oral presentations, and both independent and group projects the students are encouraged to explore their faith, learn Catholic doctrine, and continue their process of faith formation. The students are evaluated through homework assignments, independent work, written and oral class work as well as quizzes and tests.

While CJCR is a Catholic school that teachers the Catholic faith, it is not necessary for a student to be Catholic or have previously received CCD instruction to do well in Religion class. Any student who actively participates in class activities and works to the best of his/her ability will excel in this class.

MIDDLE SCHOOL COMPUTER INSTRUCTION

Our goal is to establish a foundation in computer knowledge that will provide students with an understanding of how technology is used in the real world.

Students will initially be taught computer basics including computer hardware, input and output, computer rules, login and shut down procedures, mouse skills, and keyboarding.

Our K-8 program in computer instruction will integrate a range of technology skills at different grade levels into students learning including word processing, spreadsheet, Power Point, Excel, electronic research, e-mail and presentation skills.

Emphasis will be placed on using technology for research, critical thinking, problem solving and creativity.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ENGLISH

The CJCR middle School English curriculum has been developed to foster the growth of students’ oral and written communication skills. Focus is given to specific grammar fundamentals along with vocabulary/spelling lessons within skills exercises, but primarily through written activities.

Writing assignments include daily journal writing, weekly focused writing assignments, independent written responses, and long-term writing assignments. In addition, students are exposed to a variety of authentic texts that demonstrate exceptional writing skills.

The CJCR English program has been designed to enable students to develop independent writing skills within the context of correct grammar structures while fostering creative thinking, mature study habits and organizational skills necessary for continued success at the high school level.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MATH PROGRAM

The mathematics program consists of grade 6 and 7 General Math, Pre-Algebra and Algebra I. General math covers general math skills, statistics, graphing, geometry and measurements, probability and an introduction to algebra. Pre-Algebra is offered in grades 7 and 8. The Algebra I course is taught in grade 8.

These programs create an environment in which students become problem solvers, reinforcing their skills to plan, solve and communicate mathematical knowledge both written and verbally. This is achieved through explorations, mini-labs, hands-on labs, chapter projects, real life activities, spreadsheet investigations, games, working cooperatively and enrichment activities.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SOCIAL STUDIES

The social studies curriculum at CJCR begins in grade 6 with a study of selected countries of Europe, Africa, and Asia with a special unit on Canada. The countries chosen for examination are those whose history, economic systems, geography, or culture is either unique and/or representative of their particular geographic region.

Students at both the seventh and eighth grade level study United States history. Seventh graders begin at the pre-Columbian era and progress through the Civil War; eighth grades pick up at Reconstruction and continue on to the twenty-first century. Themes and principles from the social sciences such as economics, geography, and psychology are utilized in an effort to achieve a broad vision and interpretation of America’s colorful and variegated past. This study assists in creating an understanding and appreciation of our unique culture and diverse population. Throughout this two-year study of United States history, attention is given to Rhode Island and New England, both its people and rich historical past.

Students are evaluated through independent work, oral presentations, artistic expressions, homework, as well as quizzes and tests. Technology is utilized extensively in researching historical events or people, current events, and important in seeking historical interpretations. The students’ knowledge and skills are evaluated by chapter quizzes and tests, homework, class work, class participation and independent work.

MIDDLE SCHOOL SCIENCE

The Middle School Science Program is an exploration of Earth Science in Grade 6, Life Science in Grade 7, and Physical Science in Grade 8.

In individual and small group activities such as class discussions, lab demonstrations and experiments, oral presentations and debates the students are expected to be able to understand and demonstrate their use of the scientific method, key scientific concepts and terms.

Various types of assessments will be utilized to determine each students’ performance including: homework assignments, independent work, written and oral classroom work and tests.

Our goal is to increase each student’s general knowledge and to prepare them for high school.
